Thomas Timothy Smith, M.D.
Thomas Timothy (T.T.) Smith, M.D., was a product of rural Nebraska. He attended Creighton University as an undergraduate and as medical student, receiving his medical degree in 1933. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology and received a master’s degree in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943.
After military service, he returned to Omaha in 1946 and entered the practice of Otolaryngology. That same year he was appointed to the faculty of the School of Medicine at Creighton. He became chairman of the department in 1950, a position he held until 1974. His special interests were nasal allergy, head and neck cancer, and he was noted as a master endoscopist with a particular talent for foreign body removal. He dedicated himself extensively to the education of students, residents and practicing physicians. He was responsible for the introduction of ear microsurgery into Omaha in the 1950s.
Dr. Smith assumed a leadership role in the initial projections and planning of the Boys Town Institute for Communication Disorders in Children. His dream became a reality that now exists as Boys Town National Research Hospital.
Forum Speakers:
John Ewing: John Ewing has been a devoted public servant for three decades. Ewing's nearly 25 year tenure as a police officer instilled in him the importance putting the safety and well-being of his community above all else. His time as a minster allowed him to develop close ties with the Omaha community providing a positive influence. And his service as Douglas County's Treasurer has given him experience in managing large budgets and championing fiscal responsibility.
Ewing streamlined government services using technology to provide better service in the Treasurer’s office saving taxpayers over $1 million per year while operating under a balanced budget. Prior to that, Ewing retired as Deputy Chief of the Omaha Police Department after spending many years working midnight shifts on some of the most challenging cases. Ewing worked to get 10 laws passed in response to the horrific sexual child abuse and violence against women he encountered while Lieutenant of the Special Victims Unit.
Lee Terry: A lifelong Nebraskan, Congressman Lee Terry was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November of 1998. Prior to serving as a Representative, Terry served eight years on the Omaha City Council. He also was a managing partner in a local law firm.
Terry has worked continually to empower the people of the Second District. He has been a consistent leader for Nebraska, advocating American energy independence, respect for life, and fiscally sound balanced budget.
He currently serves on the influential Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees energy, commerce, public health, telecommunications, and many other important issues.
Planning Committee: Sally C. O’Neill, Ph. D.; Marianne Culhane, J. D.; Peter R. DeMarco, M.D.; Richard L. O’Brien, M.D., F.A.C.P.; the Rev. Andy Alexander, S.J.; Deborah Daley; Marcia Shadle-Cusic; Cate Pogge; Mrs. Cece Smith, Michon Marcil Abts, Chris Rodgers, Steven Marcoux.
